About this project
The Forgotten Stories project is an initiative from the Dick Scherpenzeel Foundation. The organization stimulates Dutch media for more and better news coverage about development issues and non-western cultures. John Verhoeven, the editor of magazin OnzeWereld, came up with this idea.
The project is financed by NCDO, Oxfam Novib, ICCO, FNV Mondiaal en Free Voice.
The idea behind the project:
Worldwide there are billions of stories about just as many events on this planet. Sometimes these are really worthwhile reading, but unfortunately the media will not and cannot discuss all of them. They remain unseen and untold stories. Forgotten Stories.
The Dick Scherpenzeel Foundation seeks out those kinds of topics; stories of non-western countries that could possibly provide a more honest division of wealth, and stories that cannot be ignored just because they don’t really fit into the traditional atmospheres of journalism.
Send us your ideas for such a story, in a maximum of 300 words, to info@dickscherpenzeelstichting. Tell us exactly where and what the subject you would like to report on is. Use your knowledge about important matters, not just about projects your organisation works on. Make it as journalistic as possible.
A jury of experienced journalists will select the top ten best entries. A few editions of Vergeten Verhalen 2009 will be published. The Dick Scherpenzeel Foundation will ask other papers and television editorial offices to work out one or more of the ideas. It’s one way for the organization to demand attention for the untold stories of journalism. You can send your Forgotten Story of 2009 before December 8 to info@dickscherpenzeelstichting.nl Is your story selected in the top ten, then you win a mini-camera, the Flip Mino HD.
Just as welcome are your unpublished photos of forgotten issues. We will publish them on this website www.hetvergetenverhaal.nl. Nobody can copy your photo illegally, because we make mention of the photographer and his / her website. However, there is a chance that visitors of the website may contact you to buy one or more photos. Tell us in the caption why you choose this photo, and how people can contact you to buy your photos.
